Your Guide to a Healthier, Happier Workplace

Unfortunately life isn’t a breakfast cereal ad, and there isn’t always time to fit in a morning run along the beach and a yoga session with friends, before a long day at work.

Your mornings are probably more likely met with a lack of sleep, high stress levels and a poorly nutritious meal (usually the aforementioned breakfast cereal). According to Medibank, showing up to work unwell costs the Australian economy over $30 billion a year, so it’s important that our workplace provides the resources to help people make positive lifestyle changes, since work is where we spend approximately one third of our lives.

So here are a few things you can do at work to make yours the healthiest workplace in Mandurah:

Work is often about becoming the master of efficiency, however when it comes to your health, sometimes the easiest option isn’t always best. Rather than choosing the closest car park to the door, park your car a reasonable distance away from work so you get a short walk at the beginning and end of every day. And if you've got an escalator or lift in the office, climb a few flights of stairs instead, which might just give you the energy boost you need to get you through the next few hours.

Don’t get stuck in one position for the whole day, whether it be staring at a screen, or operating machinery. Make it your mission to sit less and move more, by taking a short walk around the office or worksite every 30-60 minutes. If you can’t give up your efficiency obsession, take the opportunity to go fill up your water bottle and you can achieve two things at once by making sure you stay hydrated.

Be an upstanding workplace wellness warrior and hold standing work meetings, or relay messages in person rather than sending emails or SMS's across the office.

Avoid vending machines and the 3pm munchies by taking turns with your work-mates to provide healthy snacks for the office such as mixed nuts or a bowl of fresh fruit.

And if you really want to take your workplace wellness to a whole new level, rope a few colleagues into a lunch-time workout which has been proven to boost mental relaxation and work productivity.

Finally, get caught out mediating on the job. Take time out to focus on your breath, relax your tummy muscles, drop your shoulders and enjoy your day.
