One of the many reasons people visit a chiropractor is for relief of sciatic nerve pain. Sciatica is a general term that can refer to several possible symptoms arising from various different causes. Confusing right?
The good news is that chiropractic is often helpful in treating many of the underlying causes of sciatic nerve pain.
There are two sciatic nerves, one for each leg, and they are the longest and widest nerves in your body, looking and acting much like an electrical cord for the leg. Beginning in your lower back, the sciatic nerve travels through your buttock, into your leg and down to your foot. The nerve is very important as it allows you to feel the skin of your leg and generates movement in various muscles of the leg and foot.
The problem then is that because the sciatic nerve is so large and travels so far, it can become injured or pinched at various points along its path. Because there are many possible causes of sciatica, it is important to visit a chiropractor as soon as possible once you begin experiencing symptoms, to determine both the cause and the best course of treatment. Symptoms vary considerably but may include a dull ache, mild tingling, an electric or even a burning sensation in the leg; all of which are usually worse after sitting, coughing or laughing. What a bummer!
